Excellent choice for transporting your camera equipment to remote locations July 4, 2010 William W. Davis 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1ZYJI41632OSD QUICK SUMMARY: See my video review! Excellent, professional-grade photographer's DSLR travel bag is rugged and tricked-out to the max. Aside from it's rather heavy weight and high cost, there's not much to dislike. Recommended!
WHAT I LIKED:
- Tricked-out to stow lots of camera accessories, including even a nice 15" laptop sleeve (which I didn't show off in my video review) and pouch
- Shoulder harness permits toting photographic equipment wherever wheels won't roll
- Weatherproofed so expensive equipment won't likely get water damaged, even in a downpour
- Versatile and customizeable to fit your unique travel needs
WHAT I DISLIKED:
- It's heavy enough that, once fully loaded, it would be difficult to stow this bag in an airplane overhead bin
- The tightness of the zippers can make it difficult to zip/unzip around the bag's corners
- I disliked the spring-loaded, extensible handle which I fear will spring out of the bag unexpectedly
CONCLUSION:
I'm not a professional (or even semi-professional) photographer, but if I were, this travel case would be a terrific investment to safely stow and move my equipment to various shooting locations. But it won't replace a very lightweight, compact camera case that you'll also need and want.
REview May 25, 2010 Tim E Robertson (Battle Creek, Mi United States) aving had the opportunity to use a number of Lowepro products, I can tell you that the Pro Runner is made very well. The materials (600d Polyester Square Rip-stop Polyester) and build quality are second to none. There are a number of features that help to set this roller bag apart. From its fully padded interior to its patented, built-in All Weather (AW) Cover, the Pro Runner x450 AW guards your expensive gear and instills that peace of mind we all long after when going on the road.
Some of the features include: a spring-loaded trolley handle; premium wheels; checkpoint-friendly laptop sleeve; see-through luggage/business card pocket; side compression straps with quick-release buckles; a Hideaway Tripod Mount system; rain-flap lids; SlipLock attachment loops; mesh side pockets; discreet front pocket accommodates a light jacket, cell phone or MP3 player; memory card pockets on the inside lid; padded mesh back-pad; thickly padded shoulder straps with 5 adjustment points; padded waist-belt; durable rubber grab handles; and zippered document pocket. For more information on the specs and features, jump to the product page.
Indeed, this is a large roller bag (12.8W X 6.3D X 17.5H in.). However, the many ergonomic features employed by Lowepro, all work together to provide a pleasant and practical balance between size and usability.
USABILITY
Macworld 2010: This bag was an indispensable partner during my days at Macworld this year. The x450 allowed me to bring along some of my higher end camera gear for the event. Bringing along a Canon 7D body, a couple of lenses, my MacBook Air (I could have brought my 15" MacBook Pro without a problem), some flash gear, cables, and the other miscellaneous stuff Geeks tend to schlep along on any road trip, all fit nicely in the x450. This year, my hotel was farther away from Moscone North and West. This meant that I had to take the Muni and/or walk the nearly eight city blocks with the x450 faithfully following behind. The curved trolley handle and premium wheels made a huge difference during my stay in San Francisco. This roller bag was very easy to pull and maneuver. The curved handle allowed the bag to extend far enough behind so as not to clip your heels when walking at a full stride (very important). My only complaint was/is the lack of a mesh water bottle holder on the outside. This would have been so much easier during my trip. I ended up having to place my water bottle in the outer zipper compartment which made it difficult to access the other items in that compartment (more on this later). All and all, I would have to say that, sans the water bottle issues, the x450 passed the Macworld test with flying colors.
On Location with a Working Photographer: I have used the x450 on a couple of photography shoots this year. For a wedding shoot, I needed to bring along two camera bodies, multiply flashes, multiply wireless triggers, two lenses with their accompanying hoods, my MacBook Pro, a monopod, cables, CF cards, batteries, a battery charger, and a couple of straps. On previous wedding shoots, this would have required a couple of bags. The x450 handled the load in a workman like fashion. As a photography companion, the x450 performed very well.
MAKING A GREAT APP EVEN BETTER
This is a great roller bad to be sure. However, the omission of a mesh water bottle holder, while it may seem to be a small thing, is, in actuality, a big deal. When one is on the road, water is not always easily available. Carrying water with you is a necessity. Having to store that water bottle within the main compartment of the bag, or the outer zipper compartment are not good solutions to the problem. I would like to see Lowepro add a mesh holder to the left side of the x450. This would be a simple remedy to a significant problem IMO.
[...] Review Rating:
The Lowepro Pro Runner x450 AW is the best roller bag I have used. It is roomy and easy to handle in all weather conditions. However, there is one glaring feature missing from this feature rich product, an external mesh water bottle holder. This omission will be a problem for most if not all of the target users of this product. Therefore, I am awarding the Pro Roller x450 AW a well deserved rating of 8 out of 10 in our [...] Rating System.
Great for the traveling photographer! May 26, 2010 Joseph P. Jenkins (philadelphia, PA) I just received my new bag via Amazon (fast shipping, great price =), and I am very very pleased. I currently use a Nikon D90, with a couple extra lenses (bought the body only, decided to splurge on lenses). I went ahead and bought a Lowepro Fastpack 250 last year to carry all my camera gear, as well as a laptop. For those interested in that product, here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Fastpack-250-Black/dp/B000YIYQ30/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1274884749&sr=1-9
I recommend the 250 to airport travelers who have a 15" or smaller laptop, and have a semi-professional setup.
Now onto this bag. I took it out of the box and noticed the quality was excellent right away. From the sleeve, to the wheels, to the quality of the bag itself, I knew I had a winner. I grabbed my macbook pro 15" and she fit perfectly. I then grabbed my D90 and its lenses and started to move them over. I had no issues with tightness or space, and I have plenty of room left for other goodies (a nice flash is next on my list). All my cables, sd cards, gorillapod stand, etc, all fit no problemo. Then I zipped it all up, and tried out the roller feature. I am digging it for the fact that I can now bring a second backpack if needed for trips, and just use this bag as a rollerbag.
Anyways, I just got the bag, so I will update this review in the future on its durability, but I have no doubt she will hold up.
Well Made--They Thought of Everything! May 28, 2010 Chris (Montana) This may be nicest backpack I have seen. The designers have thought of everything one might need. The main compartment has multiple removable dividers. On the outside it looks like a square, smaller backpack but the features it offers are great; laptop sleeve, pen holders, wallet holders, a carry handle, a hidden set of straps for using it as a backpack or pull out the handle and use it as a roller bag. It is very obviously a quality product and to top it off, if you are caught in bad weather, it carries its own weather cover up. I have to say if all of the Lowepro products are this good, I will be an absolute fan. The bag is rather heavy and I think it would be better as a carry bag, or roller bag, but maybe a bit heavy for a backpack.
The price is high but it does buy you top quality. I would recommend this product.
This is my idea of a camera bag! June 18, 2010 Kent Baker (Seattle, WA) This is simply the best camera bag I have ever owned. It easily carries my dSLR, a 150 - 500mm lens, a 18-200mm lens, a 70-300 macro lens and all the stuff I need to do my nature photography. I can also carry a laptop in its own (provided) case. There is also a great tripod carrying arrangement. It has a very comfortable padded hipstrap that you can tuck away, along with the shoulder straps, when they not needed. Its very comfortable as a backpack camera case, or as a carry-on case. It also has its own set of wheels and extensible handle so you can wheel it around! They really seemed to think of everything for this beauty. I am very happy with it! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a really good camera case.
